Baptism
This sacrament is often called “the Door of the Church” because it is the first sacrament to be received, and required in order to receive any of the other sacraments. It is the first of three Sacraments of Initiation, the others being Confirmation and Holy Communion, which strengthen and nourish the baptized. The baptized person is immediately considered a member of the Church.
In early times, this sacrament was conferred outside the main part of the church building, to underscore that it was necessary for admission.
The Church also teaches of the Baptism of Blood and the Baptism of Desire. For more information, see the Catechism of the Catholic Church online here.
Nicodemus said to him, “How can a person once grown old be born again?
Surely he cannot reenter his mother’s womb and be born again, can he?”
Jesus answered, “Amen, amen, I say to you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit.”
